Every recommendation and booking are intentional and thoroughly vetted. We have a full process, operational principles, and benchmarks required of every partner. When a hotel, guide, or operator falls short of these standards, they are not included on the itinerary.

How we select partners

Every hotel, destination management company, and local guide are individually evaluated before making a recommendation. We favor locally owned and operated partners over international corporate chains, ensuring that the financial investment of your journey stays within the community you visit. In addition, whenever possible we avoid properties or operators that rely on single-use plastic.

Our evaluation criteria:

Local Ownership: Independent, locally owned properties and operators take priority, ensuring your travel spend directly supports community members and the regional economy.

Environmental Practice: We prioritize properties who don't have single-use plastic, have clear water and energy conservation, and active habitat protection.

Community and Cultural Engagement: Cultural experiences must be community-led.

Labor and Welfare: We verify fair wages, safe working conditions, and formal child welfare policies across all operations.

Climate Commitment: We prioritize partners with measurable emissions targets or active pledges to recognized global benchmarks such as the Glasgow Declaration.

Our Travel Principles

Before departure, we provide every client with clear destination guidance grounded in respect, safety, and cultural awareness. We ask that all Altered Atlas clients adhere to these principles when traveling.

Photography: Request explicit permission before photographing local residents. If cultural landmarks or religious sites have rules regarding photography, please respect them.

Purchasing: Direct your purchasing power toward local artisans and makers rather than imported souvenir outlets.

Wildlife Protection: We connect clients exclusively with opportunities to observe animals in their natural habitats. We'll never book experiences involving animal performance, riding, or photo opportunities.

Waste Reduction: Minimize waste wherever you travel, leaving no trace and refusing single-use plastic whenever local conditions allow.

Local Customs: Honor regional traditions, dress appropriately, and observe correct etiquette at all sacred and religious sites.

Beyond the Itinerary

Altered Atlas is built to direct capital and attention toward initiatives that safeguard entire destinations. Beyond selecting ethical accommodations, we commit operational and financial resources directly to local conservation, cultural preservation, and community projects regularly. i
