What fee-based travel planning means, and what decides your itinerary

"Travel advisor" covers a few different pay models, but it's hard to know which one until something feels a little off. Maybe you've seen it before? A recommendation seems a little too convenient. A property comes up again and again with no clear reason why. The advisor is friendly and responsive right up until you ask why they picked what they picked.

Knowing the difference between the models is the fastest way to understand what's shaping your itinerary.

The three models, in plain terms

Commission-only is the traditional model.

The advisor doesn't charge you anything directly. Instead, hotels, tour operators, and cruise lines pay them a percentage when you book. You never see a bill from the advisor, but you're still paying for their time, it's simply built into the price of whatever you book.

Fee-only means the advisor charges a planning fee and takes no commission from any supplier, ever, under any circumstance.

Fee-based means the advisor charges a planning fee on every trip, and may also receive standard industry commission on some bookings, through the host-agency relationships most independent advisors work within. That's the model Altered Atlas uses.

Why we don't chase commission

A fee-based model still leaves room for commission to influence recommendations ... if the advisor lets it.

Altered Atlas doesn't.

We don't go looking for properties that pay commission, and commission availability is never part of how a hotel, guide, or operator gets vetted or added to an itinerary. Every partner has to clear the same published standards.

If a partner that clears that standard happens to offer commission through our host agency, we don't turn it away. That commission compensates for managing the actual bookings and maintaining vendor relationships. This hybrid model we use ensures we are fairly paid for upfront work via the planning fee, even if a trip is modified or canceled.

What this means for your itinerary

Because commission is never the deciding factor, the network we build itineraries from includes local, community-owned, and independently run partners that a commission-driven advisor might never surface, alongside major properties that happen to pay commission and still clear the same standard.

Every property answers to the same criteria either way.
